The YWCA Durham is working to reestablishitself as this community’s leading provider of service to vulnerable women andtheir children, through support from a $21,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Jerry Ouellette, MPP for Oshawa, joined Board, staff, volunteers and residents of the YWCA Durham to congratulate them on 65 years of service and to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of the assisted housing program at 55 McGrigor. MPP Ouellette announced the funding which will allow the YWCA to develop newsignage and materials that will let community members who need their service know how to access the YW, and to let supporters know that the charity needs financial donations and involvement. “This grant is an investment in the health of our community,” said MPP Ouellette. “The YWCA Durham is a cornerstone of service to women in Durham who need support. We must reignite the community’s interest.” “The YWCA Durham has served this community for 65 years. The assisted housing program that we’re celebrating today houses women who benefit from special supports and their children,” says Judy Mead, Manager of Communications and Fund Development for the YWCA. “Although the YW has been here since 1945, many in this community don’t know who we are, what we do or how to find us. We are thankful for the government of Ontario’scommitment to the women and children we serve.” A leading grant maker in Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary sector through investments in community-based initiatives. An agency of the Government of Ontario, OTF builds healthy and vibrant communities. www.trilliumfoundation.org |
